Philip Wilson Steer was a son of Birkenhead whose artistic prowess brought much success during his own lifetime, but he is sadly less well known now than he deserves to be.

The end of the year is approaching and our thoughts turn once more to the possibility of a white Christmas, as they must have done over a century ago in the small Liverpool studio of artist James Thomas Watts. Watts painted the beautiful Winter Twilight which is currently hanging in the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead.
