William Barnes Wollen (1857–1936) was born in Leipzig he was educated in London before beginning a formal art education at the Slade School. In his early career he painted sporting scenes but gradually developed into a painter of battle scenes.

Monk’s House, where this painting hangs, was bought in 1919 by the writer Virginia Woolf and her husband, the political activist, journalist and editor Leonard Woolf. Its tranquil location in the village of Rodmell, three miles south-east of Lewes, afforded them a relaxing space away from the bustle of London.
A View of the Peak: The Dove Holes by John Harris (1715-1755)

Wilhelmina (or Willie) Barns-Graham was born in St Andrews, Fife, on 8 June 1912. As a young child she showed signs of creative ability and wanted to be an artist from a very early age.

Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraten was the eldest and most successful of an artistic family. He specialised in wintry views of Dutch townscapes and lived in Amsterdam where he produced his earliest dated scenes in the 1650s.

Captain Powell was born to affluent parents and grew up in Hammerton Hall in Lancashire, a prestigious manor house which dates back to the 1600’s. He relinquished a comfortable existence for a life of adventure and service in the British Army joining the 9th (or the East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot, an infantry line regiment which is now part of the Royal Anglican Regiment.

The Avalanche at Lewes, 1836 attributed to Thomas Henwood
On December 27th 1836 tragedy struck the people of Lewes in an event that was the worst ever seen of its kind. The winter weather was exceptionally brutal across the country, with the South of England especially vulnerable to heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions. This had caused a huge build-up of snow on the side of Cliffe Hill, an imposing chalk cliff that towered above the eastern side of Lewes.
